"Where a highly tuned curiosity and feeling of innovation meets musical and technical perfection resulting in a deep appreciation from their audiences, wherever they may be. Long live FUKIO!"

                                                                                   -David Smeyers

“The musicians created a three dimensions sound experience, in which you almost could feel them throwing around with sounds.”

 -Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger

Widely considered as one of the most thrilling young saxophone ensembles on the modern scene in Europe. The Fukio saxophone quartet has devoted itself, since its foundation in 2007, to the exploration of chamber music repertoire for the saxophone.

In addition to appearances at major concert venues in Germany, China, the UK and Spain including at the Fundación Juan March and Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, the ensemble has performed at numerous festivals such as Austria’s IMPULS Academy, Festival de Música de Monteleón, Mallorca Saxophone Festival and Encontre Internacional de Compositors in Mallorca, at Spitzentöne and Romanisches Sommerfestival in Cologne, at Freunde Junge Musiker in Düsseldorf and Frankfurt, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival and at Young Euro Classics in Berlin.

The quartet is supported by the Werner Richard–Dr. Carl Dörken Foundation and it has won prizes at distinguished international competitions including the Jeunesses Musicales Spain, the Yamaha International Chamber Music Competition in Spain and the Gianni Bergamo Classic Music Award in Lugano; the Gold medal at the UGDA Competition in Luxembourg, first prize at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Hochschulwettbewerb, the first prize at the Coop Music Awards in Milano, the first prize at the Karlsruher Wettbewerb für die Interpretation Neue Musik and the first prize at the 20th International Chamber Music Competition in Illzach.

In 2016, Fukio was awarded a CD scholarship by the WDR Radio, the ARS Produktion, the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Köln and the Vereins der Freunde und Förderer der Hochschule für Musik in Cologne. The ensemble has featured in broadcasts for Deutschlandfunk, WDR, Resonance FM, La2, Radio Catalunya and RTVE.

Commissioning new pieces and education work are two central pillars of the quartet. Fukio has commissioned and premiered more than twenty new pieces dedicated to the quartet. Fascinated with other art-forms, the ensemble has also worked within several multidisciplinary projects together with  dancers, theatre, electronic and audiovisual artists.

The Fukio saxophone quartet specialised with a master’s degree in contemporary music with Prof. David Smeyers and Cuarteto Casals at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. The ensemble coursed Erasmus studies of chamber music within the class of Prof. László Hadady at the CNSMD Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Paris.
